Name Mark A. Wingo Age 36 Profession President & CEO New Beginning Financial Group L.L.C. One Word That Encouraging Describes You IF YOU'VE EVER WATCHED THE HBO SHOW BALLERS, you might see a similarity between Mark A. Wingo and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character, Spencer Strasmore, who relentlessly works to protect the financial wealth of NFL players. In 2015, Wingo partnered with Hall of Fame Financial as a financial representative and worked closely with former Minnesota Viking and NFL Hall of Famer Carl Eller. Wingo has also coached other professional athletes through financial planning, helping them transition to life after the game and start their own tax businesses, via his "My Tax Business in A Box" program.
Since creating Minneapolis-based New Beginning Financial Group L.L.C. in 2009, Wingo's mission has been simple: to help American families eliminate personal debt and increase individual retirement accounts. We caught up with the author of Wingonomics ($21.95; Mark A. Wingo) to better understand the man behind this mission.
How did you turn struggle into success?
As a young father with absolutely no financial literacy, I found myself struggling with money. This was ironic because I actually got a job in the banking and finance industry, consulting with consumers about financial responsibility. In fact, I [actually] went broke using the same advice I was taught to give people. While this was the worst financial time of my life, it was also the most rewarding for me. Out of this struggle, I created a concept called "Wingonomics" and began volunteering at a transition home for women. I gave encouragement to women who were living way below the poverty level, and they, in tum, encouraged me as a financial educator.
What is the best advice you ever received?
Don't be afraid to share your story. People need to hear about how you've overcome your [own] struggles, so they know they can overcome their storms, too
